The Office of Academic Affairs is proud to introduce HuskerScan to academic support programs and resource centers. HuskerScan is an application that enables academic programs to track students' participation at events by swiping their NU id cards. HuskerScan was developed in response to programs that identified a need to record and track student performance. Because HuskerScan data is stored in UNL's student information system, it can be used by Academic Affairs to measure student attendance at various events and assess impact of student success initiatives.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are some benefits of using HuskerScan?
Those who work directly with students can quickly see which activities students have participated in or services they have utilized. When the information is recorded, it creates a transparent system for support staff to see student activity. During its pilot, HuskerScan saved the First-Year Experience and Transition Program over 50 hours of hand-entering notes into MyPLAN. Students who attended FYETP probation sessions swiped their cards, and the information was sent to PeopleSoft and eventually MyPLAN. Those working with students on Academic Recovery Plans could quickly see if a student had attended an Intake session. In addition, once the data is recorded electronically, we can begin to study the data and see which services provide benefit and are utilized most by students.
What events are eligible for HuskerScan?
Eligible events include academic support programs and activities that impact student success. Academic Affairs oversees and approves HuskerScan use. We do have the capability to keep events on our reporting server and not send all data to the student information system. The system cannot be used for "clocking in" student workers or recreational social events.
Can I print name tags?
HuskerScan can print name tags in three formats. The student tag includes a pennant with the Academic 'N', and includes three lines for name, major and class level. The faculty/staff tag displays name and primary job description. The generic tag has one line for a full name.
Who all can use HuskerScan?
For attendance, anyone with a NUID (so, faculty, staff, undergraduates, graduate students, and students who have graduated from UNL). Anyone can create a name tag.
What kinds of reports can I get from HuskerScan?
You can log into HuskerScan and check by NUID if a student has a recorded session in the system. There is also an Excel compatible export available to view attendance details for a meeting. Attendance records are also available in Tableau for custom reporting.
What if a student forgets their NCard or NUID altogether?
You can hand-key the NUID into the system. You also can hand-key students' My.UNL username if they have forgotten their NUID.
What hardware do I need?
Units that utilize HuskerScan need to purchase either a magnetic card stripe or a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) reader and a device that has internet access (e.g. desktop, tablet, laptop). There are some limitations with Apple products due to the USB device that records attendance.
